Austin Sammut B.A.(Hons) LL.D.

Austin Sammut read for a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and then for a Doctorate in Law at the University of Malta, obtaining his warrant to practice as an advocate in 1982. Previously he was Managing Partner of Ganado Sammut Advocates and he steered this firm from its traditional civil law practice to a commercial law one.  After a number of years heavily involved in litigation work, he became more and more occupied with his non-court, commercial law practice, including the drafting of commercial agreements, international corporate business, financial services, property transfers and development and project finance, joint ventures, intellectual property, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.

Austin Sammut is a director of Europa Research & Consultancy Services Limited (ERCS), which provides consultancy and assistance in EU related projects.

In 1998, he jointly set up Malta Dispute Management Limited (MDM) of which he is one of the two managing directors.  This company provides ADR services and is a member of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) of the U.K., with which Dr. Sammut is an accredited mediator.  He has also received intensive training at the Singapore Mediation Centre. 

Austin Sammut is a member of the International Bar Association, MARQUES, the Association of European Trademark Owners, and Council of the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners in Malta.  He is a lecturer and examiner in law at the University of Malta and has regularly contributed to international law and other journals and addressed legal conferences.

He is also active as a journalist, being the Malta correspondent of the The Times (London) and the British Broadcasting Corporation, and having served as the first Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of The Malta Independent, as well as a regular opinion writer and radio and TV commentator on news and current affairs, and a political analyst.  He has served as Chairman of Public Broadcasting Services Limited, the public broadcasting network in Malta, as a member of the Malta Broadcasting Authority and as the first Chairman of Posta Limited (now Maltapost plc).  He is also Chairman of the Trade Licensing Appeals Board and the Resources Appeals Board.

Austin Sammut is Honorary Consul of Portugal in Malta, an Honorary Member of the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic and Honorary President of the Malta national Aquatic Sports Association.  He is married to Rita Ganado, a Notary Public, and has three sons.
