obtained his Masters degree in maritime and insurance law from the University of London (UCL) and his doctorate in Maltese law from the University of Malta in 1986.
Upon returning from his post graduate studies in London he joined Farrugia & Schembri Advocates as an associate and immediately set about reorganising the firm’s shipping and corporate units in the light of the important changes to the island’s financial services infrastructure which were introduced in the same year. He was appointed partner of this firm in 1992.
In 1998, the firm changed its name to Farrugia Schembri Orland Law Firm following the admission of a new partner specialising in private law. Within the new set up, Dr Farrugia remained responsible for the development of the firm’s international corporate, shipping and financial services practice areas.
In 2009, he became joint managing partner of the newly formed law firm Fenech Farrugia Fiott Legal, an open architecture legal firm made of leading professionals in their field, and leads the firm’s substantial corporate/commercial, shipping, igaming and litigation departments.
Dr. Farrugia is an examiner of doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Laws of the University of Malta. He has also been a member of the Chamber of Advocates since 1988 and of the Chamber of Commerce since 1998.
He is a director and secretary of several companies - including Alliance Trust Company Limited (a licenced fiduciary and trustee) and Alliance Management Support Limited which are both closely associated with the firm - as well as Chairman of Integral Malta Limited. He has also been recently nominated as Chairman of Bawag Malta Bank Limited.
