The development of civil aviation law in recent years under the spotlight

Policy considerations that led to the development of civil aviation law and related infrastructure in recent years will be the principle theme of a discussion entitled "The development of civil aviation law in recent years under the spotlight" that will be taking place at the University of Malta.

This discussion will be addressed by Dr. Ian Falzon, Director General of Civil Aviation; Mr. Tony Gatt, former Director General of Civil Aviation; Mr. Joseph Schembri, former Policy Coordinator at the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Communication; Dr. Max Ganado, managing partner at Ganado and Associates Advocates and will be moderated by Dr. Tonio Fenech, managing partner at Fenech Farrugia Fiott Legal.

 

Appointment of new Senior Associate

New Malta China DTA published

As announced on this website back in July 2010, Malta signed a new double taxation agreement with China replacing a DTA dating back to 1993. The new Malta China DTA was published on the Malta Government Gazzette on the 4th November 2011 and came into force on the 25th August 2011.

Integration of Maltese tax departments

Following the publication of Bill 82 entitled the 'Commissioner for Revenue Act, 2011' in June year, the Maltese Parliament unanimously approved the Bill on Tuesday 1st November. The Bill provides for the creation of the post of a  Commissioner of Revenue who will be responsible for the management and administration of all tax legislation namely, Income Tax, Duty on Documents, VAT, Eco-tax, Customs, Import Duties and Excise Duty legislation.

 

EU funding for the Maltese agricultural industry

The Maltese Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs has launched four schemes as part of the Rural Development programme.  Their purpose is to strengthen the rural sector and ensure its sustainability. 

 

Amendments to Article 26 of Malta-Germany DTA

Amendments to Article 26 (Exchange of Information) of the Malta Germany Double Taxation Agreement have been published on the 20th September 2011. The amendments are contained in a Malta-Germany protocol signed on the 17th June 2010 and is deemed to have into force on the 19th May 2011. 

 

Appointment of a new associate

Fenech Farrugia Fiott Legal is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Maria Borg Scicluna as associate on the 5th September 2011. Maria joined the tax unit where she will be supporting tax partners Antoine Fiott and Damien Fiott in local and cross-border tax projects and tax litigation. Maria graduated as Doctor of Laws in 2010 from the University of Malta and obtained a Master of Laws Degree in Tax Law from the University of London this year.

 

Malta signs Double Taxation Agreement with Israel and the PA

New Residents Schemes announced

The Maltese Finance Minister announced that new residence schemes will be launched in the coming weeks to replace the Residents Scheme that was suspended in December 2010.
