Sette Giugno, or the 7th of June, is a national holiday in Malta, commemorating a pivotal event in the country’s history. It marks the uprising of Maltese citizens against British colonial rule on June 7th, 1919. The unrest was sparked by economic hardship, high prices, and dissatisfaction with British governance. During the protests, which turned violent, Maltese demonstrators demanded political reforms and greater autonomy. Tragically, British troops opened fire on the protesters, resulting in several deaths and injuries.
Sette Giugno is observed with reverence, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for Malta’s freedoms and democratic rights. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Maltese people in their pursuit of self-determination and national identity. The day is commemorated with ceremonies, wreath-laying ceremonies, and cultural events, fostering a sense of unity and remembrance among the Maltese population.
